For as long as I can remember, I told people "I can't run." But in March of 2009, I decided that this was no longer an option. From my first 5K to my second half marathon, I've endured my highest highs and lowest lows as an official Runner. This year I want to embrace running for something beyond times and distances.

Running is so much more than merely getting out there. I want to get out there and love it.

Week 4!

I can't believe I got myself up to run this morning! When my alarm went off, these thoughts crossed my mind: I won't have time tonight if I go to the rents after work, I can't tomorrow evening either if I go out with Scott, but if I go tomorrow morning, that means I have to run on Thursday instead of Wednesday, and Thursday morning is Lostcap, but Thursday evening is church...GAH just GO!!!! So I got up :) But it was such a great run!! The four minutes were a breeze and again, I felt like I could keep going. I had absolutely NO breathing trouble at ALL which is seriously making me all kindsa stoked because that was the one thing I was most worried about when I started this extravaganza. I DID do 12 minute miles though so that totally has something to do with it. I'm slow as molasses! But for now it works and it's a good way to keep me from getting discouraged. I can always pick up the pace down the line. Endurance over speed!

  1. Good decision Katie! I've been through that particular scenario many times. When your busy it's real easy to find an excuse not to run. I've always felt that I would be "rewarded" somewhere down the line for running when I didn't feel like it.

As you get stronger and have more endurance, you'll get a little faster naturally. No need to worry about speed. That's the best way to get injured and discouraged

  2. And I really was rewarded because I felt great all day! Very energized :)

And the reward for taking it easy/slowing down is just a generally good run where it doesn't feel like a struggle at all, so that's great incentive!

  3. Dude, those mental scenarios are classic! I wanted to stop at Kohl's after work yesterday but I knew I had to run. I thought about just doing it today instead but wasn't sure when I'd be going to Nate's. Finally I was like, just go home and do it!! Haha. You really do have to kick yourself in the ass from time to time.

And I concur with Davey's sentiment re: the pacing issue. The thing that made ALL the difference in my training was keeping the pace extremely light and just running as far as I possibly could. To me, I'm much more impressed with running for 30 minutes straight than doing a 7 minute mile.

Great job so far! There's nothing like that 'rewarding' feeling you get and I'm really happy you're starting to experience it :)

  4. Thanks so much Zeetlebee!! I'm glad you convinced yourself to run yesterday too :) It's true, sometimes you've just gotta get out there! I will definitely remember to pace myself too because distance is totally my main goal, not speed!
